“Making a Scene” recap

Cramb In Creative Blog

On Saturday the 9th of November, I attended the National Film & TV School Scotland’s (NTFS) “Making a Scene” event held at Creative Stirling.

NFTS Scotland came to Creative Stirling to talk to people about what they do in the film industry. The first bit I saw was going to was Chris Maxwell on camera who was talking to us about how to use his Steadicam camera equipment. I even managed to hold one at one point. It was so heavy I felt like I was almost about to drop it but thankfully Chris saved me.

Then the next workshop that I went to was the screen writing with Colin. I thought screen writing wasn’t going to be for me but I was gladly wrong. I think the screen writing was really good. I learned that It’s basically developing a storyline of a character. For example, the character may be struggling with their choices in a movie, and the screen writer tries not to make it too obvious but to try let the viewer pick it up ourselves. I found it really interesting knowing what screen writing is, and that it is really important.

So then after we all had a quick lunch break the next workshop was with Jackie who does locations, Jackie has worked on a lot of well known films like Avengers Infinity War and Trainspotting so meeting her and listening to her talk about what and why she works in locations was great. Locations isn’t something I’m really interested in doing but I do know its very important for a movie and TV show to have a good location to match the vibe the film is trying to achieve.

So the last workshop that I went to was Aris doing sound I found very interesting learning how they make the sound in tv and movies, Aris has worked in Stirling before this and came all the way from Newcastle to come back to Stirling for this event. I did wish it was more hands on to learn how they make iconic sounds in films although it was still fascinating and would love for Aris to come back.

The other workshops that I didn’t  got to see was Elle Wilson who spoke about Costume and Jamie Lapsley for Art Department. I sadly didn’t see them but hopefully one day we get to do another event like this in the future and I can hear all about the work they do. Big shout out to Jamie for recently winning a Bafta, congratulations!

Also big shout out to Judith for running the event. She is an Assistant Director, project manager for NFTS Scotland and knows a lot about jobs throughout the film & TV industry. Hopefully soon we have another big movie day like this again. Thank you all for coming to “Making a Scene”, to NFTS Scotland, the incredible speakers, and to all the people who came to the event.
