Thinking Images: A Short Course in Video Essay Making

£40 student price/£80 full price - book here

Hybrid course: join us in-person or online via Teams (link will be sent out to participants before course begins)

This short course explores the innovative practice of Video Essay creation as a cutting-edge development in film criticism, whereby lovers of film can use film itself in order to deepen their appreciation and analysis of cinema and the moving image. The video essay uses digital video editing techniques to create a new type of investigation, which offers an extra emotional dimension produced through the blending of words, images and sounds.

Film scholar and video essayist Dr. Darren Elliott-Smith (University of Stirling) will guide students through the forms, origins and influences of the video essay, drawing on noteworthy examples before inviting students to work on short projects of their own. The course will be run in a relaxed and informal environment. It will include short lecture-based workshops to begin an understanding of video essay techniques and practices; short practical digital tasks where the basics of video editing will be implemented; the production of your own short video essay (5 mins).

No prior video editing experience necessary. Students may benefit from having had some knowledge and appreciation of film/cinema criticism. Students may bring their own hardware/software for practical editing - we recommend iMovie or Clipchamp for beginners. For those that need equipment, provided please let us know in the form when booking your ticket. Any further questions about equipment please email sam@creativestirling.org for more info.

Full dates for the course are Sep 21st, Oct 5th, Oct 19th, and Nov 2nd.

The World Made Me Dotty Exhibition

OPEN 7TH JULY - 30th JULY | UPSTAIRS IN MADE IN STIRLING STORE | MON-SUN, 10-5PM

This Yayoi Kusama inspired exhibition was created with local families as a community fun day to celebrate the beginning of summer. Children, young people, and their families came together to take over our gallery space and make it colourful, fun, and dotty!

Using paint, stencils, paper designs, five-foot beach balls, and a lot of paper mache, our exhibition space has been transformed into a dotty paradise, inspired by the incredible Yayoi Kusama.

We wanted to create an experience that was fun, creative, and encouraged people to get to know each other. Come play and enjoy this interactive installaton.

This exhibition was funded by The Arts Society of Stirling and Forth Valley.

Allan’s Word Protectors Exhibtion

OPEN JUNE 29TH - JULY 13TH | UPSTAIRS IN MADE IN STIRLING STORE | MON-SUN, 10-5PM

Through weekly Outdoor Learning experiences, Primary 1 and Primary 2 at Allan’s have been celebrating ‘The Lost Words’ written by Robert MacFarlane. The learners were considering the impact of losing this language from our conversations - if we don’t speak of them will they become invisible? This nurtured a sense of responsibility to keep them ‘alive’ in our chat, our minds, our songs, and our hearts.

Enabled by support from Creative Scotland, the learners worked alongside incredible local artists, who shared their skills, passions, and stories of nature. Inspired by their meetings, learners set to work to investigate, create, and play, resulting in these special pieces. The hangings are a celebration of Allan’s 5C’s collaboration, curiosity, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. They capture and highlight some of the precious ‘Lost Words’ in nature, allowing them to honour and share their beauty and importance with others.
