Beginners Rag Rugs: Create your own customised Hessian Shopper
Would you like to be able to reuse all those old clothes and household fabrics and make them into something new and beautiful? Here is your chance to learn the basic rag rugging technique and customise your own unique reusable hessian shopping bag. Come along and learn from experienced rag rug maker Gill Curwen from Bapple and JoJo Sustainable Textiles.
Rag rug making has a long tradition in the UK – it’s recycling at its best and it helped cover those old cottage stone floors, long before the concept of fitted wall to wall carpet was invented.
We will be using old clothes, recycled jumpers, bedsheets – any sorts of old fabrics and wools that might normally be discarded – so we’ll also be helping to reduce waste and improve our carbon footprint.
Once you have learned the basic techniques, you’ll be able to use them independently in the future, and who knows, go on to create your own full sized rug.
What do I need to bring?
A good pair of scissors would be helpful although there will be some available. All materials will be provided, including your Hessian Shopper to customise – but if you have any old clothes or textiles you’d like to recycle, perhaps anything with special meaning, then you are welcome to bring them along too. Wear old clothes (probably not black) as they may get a bit fluffy!
